The Kaleidoscope: Where Will The Sounds Fall?

David Warren Harewood is a Boston-based pianist, free improviser, and composer blending structure and spontaneity.

David Warren Harewood approaches the piano without a script, without a score. Each performance is improvised in its entirety—unfolding as a complete journey discovered in real time.

Rooted in a lifelong intimacy with classical music, his touch carries the architecture of Beethoven, the clarity of Bach, and the depth of Brahms. That inheritance meets the improviser’s restless search, shaped by years of exploring jazz standards beyond their familiar edges.

Listening to David is less like attending a concert and more like entering a ritual of attention. What emerges is not display, but surrender—to the moment, to the unseen, to the mystery of music itself.

In this surrender, he becomes a vessel.

The Kaleidoscope Series

Performances & Recording Project

The Kaleidoscope is a lens. Each turn reveals a new configuration of light, color, and form — beautiful, precise, and gone the moment it shifts. No two images are ever the same.
The Kaleidoscope Series is built on that same principle. Each performance is a living moment — shaped by the musicians in the room, the audience bearing witness, and the silence between the notes. It cannot be repeated. It is not meant to be.
Beginning with solo piano, the series has expanded to trio, quartet, and now a 12-piece ensemble — always centered on the same belief: that improvisation is not a vocabulary to be learned and imitated, but a conversation to be discovered in real time, drawing from everything a musician has ever heard, studied, and felt.
Like a mandala, each performance is crafted with intention and released without attachment. The music lives in the moment of its creation. What remains is the memory of something unrepeatable — and the anticipation of what comes next.
